0:00 I want to teach you my favorite activity to build growth mindset in your kid. Growth mindset is what allows kids to tolerate difficult moments and take on challenges and bounce back from failures. I want to show you an activity I call the learning space. Take out a piece of paper and tell your kid, do you know that adults and kids have something called the learning space? Write it down. It makes it feel official. The learning space is the space between not knowing and knowing. Not knowing how to do something like not knowing how to read yet. Then we all want to get to knowing how to do it. But in between, it's very hard. It's like, oh, I'm making progress. No, I can't do it. Oh, maybe this is it. Gh, it's too hard.

0:47 Before we get to knowing, then you can tell your kid this, which is so powerful. Do you know how it feels to be in the learning space? It feels frustrating. And so the next time you feel frustrated, remind yourself, wait, this feeling is just a sign I'm in the learning space. I'm learning something new, and this is exactly the way it feels. See, when kids understand their frustration, when they have a visual, they're more likely to tolerate

Summary

The "learning space" activity helps children develop a growth mindset by teaching them to recognize and embrace the challenges of learning. By understanding that frustration is a natural part of the learning process, kids can better cope with difficulties and persist through challenges.

- Introduce the concept of the "learning space" as the gap between not knowing and knowing.
- Encourage kids to write down the term to make it feel official.
- Explain that the learning space involves feelings of frustration and uncertainty.
- Teach kids to recognize frustration as a sign that they are in the learning space.
- Reinforce that experiencing difficulty is a normal part of learning something new.
- Help children develop resilience by normalizing the struggle associated with growth.
- Use this understanding to foster a positive attitude towards challenges and failures.
