1:01 daughter is really something special i've got a daughter and a son and so i'm able to experience both of those situations so let's get into the parenting tips tip number one don't limit what she can do what happens when we have our daughters is that we sometimes think of them a little bit differently than ourselves and what i mean by that is we might say you know that's not something girls should do or that's really only for boys you

1:31 really have to be careful with the things that you say and how you approach what she wants to do let her do things that are maybe considered boy activities it's the same way that i would say if you have a son you allow him to do what people would consider girl activities the truth is is that when they are young you want them to explore everything to find out what it is that they like what it is that they don't like

1:55 whether it is society our family our own upbringing we often have our own limiting beliefs on what our children can do and that runs into the fact that she's a girl or that he's a boy and so we have to be careful on limiting the activities and the types of things that she can do you want her to be limitless you want her to experience everything so sometimes we have expectations on what a boy should do or what a girl

2:26 should do so we have to remove those expectations and allow her to be herself number two get involved in her activities so what does that mean well she might be interested in things that are a little bit different than you let's say you are a sports guy or a car guy and she's interested in dance or theater or music these may not be your thing but it's important to get involved in her activities for many different reasons that will

2:56 help you and her the idea that you are showing interest in her activities will help increase that bond and the connection that you have with her so while there might be some things that you you know don't enjoy as much or you're not really into don't allow that to limit your participation if she has a dance recital make sure you are there if she has some practice for something make sure you're there it's important that we participate in

3:24 the activities even if we don't have an interest and the reason is is because it's an interest of hers and you want to show that you are interested in her activities you also could introduce her to activities that are of interest to you sometimes kids will be interested in activities simply because their dad is interested in them but you want to find out what interests her and participate number three compliment her but focus on the inside

3:51 if you want her to have good self-esteem and good self-acceptance then focusing on the inside will help do that compliment her on you know how well she helps other people or how nice she was to somebody these are things that she put effort towards and that she has control over when you focus on her appearance those are not things that she has a choice over however if you do want to compliment her on her appearance then compliment her on

4:17 something that she made the choice of for example wow did you pick out that dress that is a great dress or did you put those ribbons in your hair it's great the way you did that that bow looks really great these are things that she chose and as a result she was the one who made the effort so we want to get away from focusing on the outside appearance in which she has no control over if you have to compliment her appearance

4:43 and just feel that urge to do so then make sure it's unconditional you know i think you're beautiful no matter what or i always think you're beautiful or you are beautiful because you are my daughter that it doesn't matter what she looks like what her hair looks like her eyes her even what she's wearing she is beautiful no matter what because she is your daughter when you focus on the inside you will have less difficulty with her

5:09 worrying about what is on the outside and it doesn't work the other way around when you get praise for what is on the outside and what you have no control over it leaves sort of a vacuum versus when you get praised on the effort that you make or how you did something or the way you were with somebody that gives you self-esteem that gives you self-acceptance the number four parenting tip for dads with daughters and probably one of the

5:37 most important pieces of advice that i can give you this is as you deal with your daughter this is as you deal with your wife a partner friends whoever that are female don't ever say anything negative about their appearance when you talk negatively about the appearance of your daughter this can be something that will stick with her for the rest of her life i have talked with adult women who have been traumatized for their entire life based on some

6:09 simple words that their father may have said unfortunately society places a tremendous amount of value on appearance and when somebody that your daughter loves and trusts says something negative about that appearance it can be devastating in general you shouldn't say anything negative whether it's about her appearance or anything else actually in the dad university program we talk a lot about different ways to communicate

6:41 and when instead of saying something negative you can ask questions you can say something in a positive way there are different ways to communicate to get your point across but being critical or judging or saying something negative about your daughter is an absolute no number five be supportive not overprotective dads with their daughters have a tendency to think that it's really important to be overprotective you know i want to

7:11 protect my little baby while we might not be so mindful about this when you are overprotective you are essentially saying that i don't think you're capable of handling this and so i need to be there and that's not the right message that we want to show our daughters we want to show them the message that they are capable and that they can handle whatever situation they are faced with allow her to handle her own problems and

7:37 you'll be there if she needs you but you don't want to be overprotective this is how we build up our daughters so that they can be strong and take on the world number six treat mom well it doesn't matter whether you are married to her mom or not she is watching listening and learning how mom is being treated so it is important that you are mindful about how you treat her mother this means being polite respectful and

8:05 not saying negative things about her talking negatively about her mom again regardless if you're with her or not is not helping your daughter in any way she wants to see that men treat women in a good way because that's then what she will expect for herself so much of how she sees the world is going to be shaped how you treat her and her mom and so you want her to see men in a positive way so that those are

8:36 the choices that she makes that she'll choose to be with men who treat her with respect and that are kind number seven parenting tip for dads with daughters spend one-on-one time together i have been really lucky to be able to spend quality one-on-one time with my daughter it is important from the very beginning that you allocate that one-on-one time to spend with her that's how you establish connection and that's how you establish bonding and when you establish that relationship

9:06 early and she gets to enjoy that one-on-one time with you that will build the foundation that will last throughout her lifetime i happen to find a group with the ymca that we get to go camping multiple times per year so i get to spend that special one-on-one time with my daughter and you better believe that that has built a great foundation we have a tremendous amount of memories as a result of going camping and experiencing things

9:32 you know these times that i've spent camping with my daughter we've gotten storms that came in we had to sleep in our car it was so cold that we had to snuggle up together there are so many instances that we still talk about you know we took pictures and video to make sure that we we remember it but we still talk about these fun times that we got to spend together spending time together with the family

9:57 is great but when you have the one-on-one time you have that ability to really make it count it's that quality time that we strive for these are all parenting tips for dads with daughters that you can implement immediately it just takes action we want our daughters to be resilient confident and happy and a lot of how she sees this world and interacts with the world is determined by her interactions with you you have a tremendous impact on how your

10:29 daughter sees this world so it is up to you as a dad with a daughter to make sure that you implement these tips if you want to gain more confidence in your parenting and understand exactly what to say and do in situations so that you don't get frustrated and you don't get stressed then the dad university program is something you want to check out i'll put a link in the description below be sure to give this video a thumbs up
