0:00 I'll never forget the day my kindergartenner came home with her first grade on her test. I knew that this was a golden opportunity to teach both of my daughters some important lessons when it comes to tests, grades, and school in general. What I taught them in that moment is that tests are designed to assess our strengths, the things that we do well, as well as our weaknesses, the areas that challenge us the most. And sometimes we will do well on a test and other times we won't. And that's okay.

0:29 Essentially tests have no way of measuring the type of person that we are. I never want them to associate their worth as a human uh with their achievements and their grades and their accolades, right? Those things are completely separate and I want them to see that as such and that essentially my expectation of them as their mom is that they try their best. They ask for help when they need it and above all else they have fun. That's our golden rule in our house. Have fun. Um, so let me know down in the comments if you have questions or thoughts about this topic and check the caption for a more fleshed out script of what I told my daughters.

Summary

The speaker shares a personal experience of teaching her daughters about the true purpose of tests and grades, emphasizing that these assessments do not define their worth as individuals. She aims to instill values of effort, seeking help, and enjoying the learning process over mere achievement.

- Tests assess strengths and weaknesses, not personal worth.
- It's normal to perform well on some tests and poorly on others.
- Grades and achievements should not define self-worth.
- The expectation is to try one's best and seek help when needed.
- Fun is a core value in their household regarding education.
- The speaker encourages open dialogue about these lessons.
