0:00 When you're a dad to be, everybody tells you that you're not going to get any sleep, your social life is over, and you better start making more money because kids are expensive. Well, those are all true. But what about the tips and the tricks and the advice that only experienced fathers know? The stuff that's never been revealed, or at least I couldn't find it on the internet when I looked. We're pulling back the curtain and giving you dad-to-be tips that nobody tells you.

0:33 [Music] Hey guys, I'm Jason Kreidman, and welcome to another episode of Dad University. We cover a different dad advice topic every Thursday. So, be sure to subscribe to the channel and click on that notification bell so you don't miss any of our videos. If you are a dad-to-be, you're probably worried about how to change the baby's diaper or, you know, how to hold the baby. But don't worry about that stuff. I mean, a couple of times and you'll be an expert yourself. I'm more concerned about your well-being.

1:17 So, these secret tips will absolutely help you along your fatherhood journey. Dad-to-be tip number one, learn empathy. If you're not familiar with empathy, start now. It's the single most important thing in parenting. Let me repeat that. Empathy is the single most important thing in parenting. Empathy is putting yourself in somebody else's place. It's looking at things from their perspective.

1:48 And being empathetic towards your baby will help you be calmer and help you be a better parent. You will understand why your child gets upset and relate to them better. You also get along better with your partner. So, learn to be empathetic. Dad-to-be tip number two, emotions are okay. See, nobody tells you that you're going to get really emotional. You're going to discover emotions that you didn't even know you had. You may cry because you're so happy.

2:21 You may be sad at something that has nothing to do with you. I don't know the exact science behind it, but our hormones are certainly affected by the process of being a father. Dad-to-be tip number three, stop complaining. Complaining doesn't work. I'm not even sure who you're complaining to, but nobody wants to hear it, and it's not an effective strategy. Also, she has it much harder than you do. Instead of complaining, find a solution.

2:54 Figure out what the problem is and do something about it. Take action. Dad-to-be tip number four, you don't have to know everything. So, sure, we created Dad University with this idea of helping dads along their fatherhood journey. We try to cover as many topics as possible, but we are all going to fail a lot. You are not going to know how to handle a situation or know exactly what your baby needs all the time.

3:26 The important thing is is that you learn what works for you and your child. You will be okay. Dad-to-be tip number five, enjoy the present. You may find yourself saying something like, "I can't wait until she can walk." Or, "It's going to be amazing when I can have a conversation with my son." Enjoy the present moment and stop worrying about what they're going to do. Otherwise, you might miss it. The time goes by so fast. Dad-to-be tip number six, your involvement is critical.

4:01 Now, this is a 50/50 deal. One-on-one time with your child is absolutely crucial for them and you. Don't leave taking care of the child up to the mom. It doesn't matter if you have a full-time job all the way down to not having a relationship with the mother. You are 50% parent to that child, and it is crucial that you are involved. Being a dad has so many facets to it. You're going to experience highs and lows.

4:32 You're going to try new things and fail. But just know that you can do this, and you're going to be awesome. I'd love to hear from you. What's some of the best dad-to-be advice that you've received? Leave your feedback in the comments section below. Be sure to give this episode a thumbs up, subscribe to the channel, click on that notification bell, and share this video on social media. We thank you for watching, and we'll see you next week.
