0:29 media has to do with seeking validation and approval sure many use it for connection but we want to show everybody what an amazing vacation we had or did you see my kid he just hit a home run yesterday in his game or the dog you have to see what the dog did this morning but to answer the question does social media mess up our kids I think we have to look at why are they posting are

0:57 they seeking the validation and approval like I just mentioned about the parents or does the younger generation simply communicate this way tell me what you think I'd love to get your comments on this in this video we're gonna take a deeper look at the social media debate and see does it mess up our children hey guys I'm Jason Craven and welcome to another episode of dad University we cover a different dad advice topic every

2:00 because they get something out of it whether they're trying to show people that their life is wonderful get some kind of validation or they're sharing something negative about their life because they want some sympathy the likes and the comments that they receive is all part of the social media addiction it is why the platforms have those features now in the world of my millennial friend that's not why he posts he grew up using social media as a

2:30 way to communicate with his friends and family so for him sharing pictures and videos and comments was the way that he communicates with them he feels connected to his friends and family by by looking at their posts but we still have to figure out if social media is ruining our kids here is the harsh reality for our children huge increases in anxiety and depression for kids bullying all-time high and kids

3:01 comparing themselves to others like we've never seen before but can we really blame all of these issues on social media well it looks like at least one thing we need to look at is why are they on social media are they trying to impress their friends with their posts or are they simply communicating validation approval are things we all value the key for us as parents is to help our children feel that from within for them to not need

3:32 the outside world for that validation we can start by using statements like you should be so proud of yourself instead of I'm so proud of you or look at what you have accomplished instead of I'm so amazed at what you have accomplished they need to feel that from within for themselves that then reduces their need to seek outside validation and approval the debate on whether social media is good or bad for our kids is alive and
