0:00 We become the things that we do, the things that we say, the things that we think. That in the end becomes the sum total of what our character is. Right? One of my favorite quotes is how we live each day is how we live our lives from Annie Dillard. Okay? So what you're if you are always moody and triggered and angry and mean to your kids, then I know that sounds really harsh, but it's certainly a realization that I had to have. You know, a lot of people are like, "No, it's not you. It's just the feeling. It's just the mood. It's just the inner child wound." Like this need to separate from those. And I was like, "Well, maybe it's my inner child wound."

0:39 But if that's coming out all day every day and that's the only thing people see from me is that I'm, you know, I feel like a victim and I feel sorry for myself and I'm I'm always offended and I'm I'm stressed out, then that's indistinguishable from just who I am at some point. So, I think it's more exhausting to be stuck in a behavior that doesn't serve us. It's more exhausting to be constantly angry, to be constantly depleted, to be constantly guilty and feeling ashamed of how we are as parents than it is to fake it. Like, put on your Mary Poppins hat, okay? Get out an umbrella, put on one of those skirts, slide down the banister, and pretend to be Mary Poppins for an afternoon. Now, is that exhausting? Are you putting on a performance? Are you putting on an act?

1:22 Sure, but you tell me when you feel more depleted. At the end of that day or at the end of a day where you're stomping around moody, frustrated, snapping, triggered, angry, unhappy. What's more exhausting?

Summary

The speaker emphasizes that our daily behaviors, thoughts, and emotions shape our character and overall well-being. They argue that consistently negative moods and behaviors can become indistinguishable from our identity, leading to exhaustion and dissatisfaction. Instead, adopting a more positive demeanor, even if it feels like acting, can be less draining than maintaining a negative mindset.

- Our character is formed by our daily actions, thoughts, and emotions.
- Negative moods can become a defining part of our identity.
- It’s important to recognize when our behavior is unhelpful or harmful.
- The speaker suggests that pretending to be positive can be less exhausting than being consistently negative.
- Acknowledging and addressing inner wounds is crucial, but it shouldn't excuse negative behavior.
- Living with a positive attitude can lead to better outcomes for ourselves and those around us.
