0:00 congratulations you're gonna be a new dad and you've got a baby on the way so maybe you've checked out some of our other pregnancy videos but if you haven't be sure to check them out after you're done with this one while in the u.s. the majority of births are done in hospitals delivering a baby outside of a hospital is becoming more popular now I recognize there are other types of scenarios other than labor and delivery rooms and hospitals like birthing
0:27 centers or you might be delivering at home other places where your wife and you might feel comfortable in this video we're going over tips for new dads in the delivery room wherever the birth may take place hey guys I'm Jason Craven and welcome to another episode of dad University we cover a different dad advice topic every Thursday so be sure to give this video a thumbs up subscribe to the channel and click on that notification bell so you know what our
0:58 videos are uploaded also it really helps us grow this channel when you share our videos so maybe you have three friends that you think would enjoy it please share this video with them I was pretty lucky my wife was a labor and delivery nurse for many years prior to us having her first child so while she did say it was very different going through the experience herself there was still familiarity with the different processes and the different things that happened
1:27 so we were both pretty lucky with that but for you you've already made the decision that you want to be in the delivery room for the birth of your child if you only get one thing from this video I want you to understand that the main purpose for a new dad being in the delivery room is to support her yes it's your child yes you want to experience the birth of your child and yes you want to share that experience
1:55 with your wife but let's be honest here she was the one who carried that baby inside her for nine months and now she is going through the physical process of labor you got the easy job on this one tip number one find out what she expects from you you don't want to find out afterwards that she really wanted to hold your hand during childbirth and instead you were a really excited new dad in the delivery room taking videos of everything you
2:25 have to have that conversation beforehand and listen to her ask her what she expects from you you'll get some bonus points just for asking that question number two know your limits in general the birthing process is pretty messy so if you get squeamish by the sight of blood or body stuff and you know that and you don't want to see it that's okay you shouldn't feel obligated to do
2:56 anything that you are not comfortable with various birthing situations usually have options you can probably stay near her head and so you don't need to see or get involved in all the details but you're going to have to balance that with any sort of expectations that she may have had and that's what you want to make sure you have those conversations beforehand number three be her advocate is she meeting something from the doctor is she uncomfortable maybe she's not
3:27 getting the attention that she needs from the staff you need to step up and be her advocate when you're in the delivery room you need to be her voice so that she doesn't have to worry about that stuff she can focus on the birth number four stay calm this is often a difficult one for new dads in the delivery room in addition to dealing with her you also have your family that you might be dealing with so
3:55 you've got stress you've got excitement and labor can take a long time so you might be tired and hungry and other things you've got nothing compared to what she's dealing with but we're talking to you so what you want to make sure is that you are at least calm being calm will hopefully help her be a little more calm which is going to help the process number five expect the unexpected be flexible you can have the most
4:24 detailed birthing plan in the world have everything all planned out and there are no guarantees having a child there's so many variables some thing can go in a different way so you want to be flexible you want to be able to expect the unexpected and if something happens try to roll with it just adjust as a new dad in the delivery room you have a big responsibility supporting her is a big deal and you
4:57 want to experience this together so work as a team and support her I would love to hear from you are you a new dad headed to the delivery room soon how do you feel about it leave your feedback in the comment section below if you found this video helpful you don't want to miss what we have for you in our other videos so be sure to like this video subscribe to the channel and click on that notification bell so you know what
5:22 our videos are uploaded and remember it really helps us grow when you share these videos so please share it with your friends we'll see you next week [Music]
