0:00 Have you ever wondered how your little one learns so much so quickly? How they pick up words, movements, and even your habits without anyone teaching them? That's the absorbent mind at work. And understanding it might just change how you see your child's development forever. Unlike us adults who can choose what we pay attention to, young children take in everything around them automatically. They cannot filter what they learn from their surroundings. They absorb a toz everything. Hi parents, welcome back to my channel. I am Ankita and today we are going to talk about something truly amazing that's happening inside your child's brain right now.
0:43 Maria Montasauri called it the absorbent mind. Have you ever wondered how your little one learns so much so quickly? how they pick up words, movements, and even your habits without anyone teaching them. That's the absorbent mind at work. And understanding it might just change how you see your child's development forever. So, let's try and understand what exactly this absorbent mind is. Dr. Maria Montisi discovered that children under 6 years old have a special type of mind. And this mind works completely differently from ours as adults. Unlike us adults who can choose what we pay attention to, young children take in everything around them automatically.
1:28 They cannot filter what they learn from their surroundings. They absorb a to zed everything. As Montasuri put it, impressions do not merely enter the child's mind. They really form it. Everything your child sees, hears, touches, experiences literally becomes a part of who they are. The absorbent mind works in two distinct phases. The first phase is from birth to 3 years. The conscious creator. During these 3 years, your child absorbs everything without even knowing that they're learning. They can't filter or choose. It all goes in. It's basically like dipping a sponge in water. It's going to absorb blue as much as red.
2:09 Right? Just like this. They don't filter what's good or bad. They absorb everything around them. And this is when they are picking up language, movement, patterns, basic human characteristics without any formal instruction. They're not just memorizing things. They are literally building themselves. This is why a 2-year-old who has probably never had a grammar lesson can somehow figure out how to frame sentences the right way. The second phase is from 3 to 6 years. We call them the conscious workers. Around the age of three, something shifts. Children start to consciously work with all that information they had absorbed. They start making sense of it, organizing it, using it purposefully. This is when you see them playing more purposefully, asking why about everything and trying to make sense of their world. Why should you care about all this this absorbent mind, conscious creator? Why? Because understanding the absorbent mind completely changes how we approach parenting and education during these early years. Here's what it means for you as a parent. Your child is always learning. Whether you're actively teaching them or not, they are absorbing everything around them. This happens naturally. This is happening effortlessly. And now environment really matters. In fact, enormously because they can't filter what they're absorbing. So you can create a positive, orderly, rich environment because children are absorbing that too. They are soaking up your words, tone of voice, how you move, how you treat others, everything. So you have to now respect their inner timeline. Each child has an internal schedule for development. What we call the inner teacher. These guides help children focus on exactly what they need at the right time. You need to trust the process. Sometimes it seems like nothing is happening, but remember the camera analogy. The film needs time to develop.
4:09 Your child may absorb something today that you might not see happening for weeks or months later. So, what can you do to make the most of this amazing absorbent mind create an order environment? Children crave order because it helps them make sense of this world. Simple organization like having specific places for toys, having a consistent routine for their day, predictable boundaries really helps their absorbent mind catalog and understand their world. Model what you want to see. Remember, they're absorbing everything, including how you speak, how you move, how you eat, how you treat others. So, if you want a polite child, be polite yourself. Want a child who loves reading? Let them see you read.
4:53 Provide rich real world experiences. The absorbent mind thrives on meaningful experiences. Involve your child in everyday cooking activities, gardening activities, laundry folding activities. These are real world experiences and they're far more valuable than flashcards or educational apps. Follow their interests. Notice what captures your child's attention and provide opportunities to explore those interests even more deeply. Those moments of intense focus are signs that the absorbent mind is hard at work. Be patient with the process. Sometimes learning isn't always visible right away, like I said. But you need to trust that your child is absorbing everything that they need to, even when you think progress is slow. The absorbent mind is one of nature's greatest gifts. It allows your child to adapt to any culture, learn any language, absorb the super complexities of human life without formal teaching. And by understanding and respecting this natural process, you can work with your child's development instead of working against it. The most amazing thing is that you don't need training. You don't need expensive materials. All you need is awareness and intention in your everyday interactions.
6:09 Remember, your child's mind is very different from yours. It's perfectly designed for the enormous task of being human. Your job as parents is not to fill it with information, but to provide the environment, experiences, and allow development to happen naturally. I'd love to hear your thoughts, questions about absorbent mind. You can drop them in comments below. Don't forget to subscribe for more Montasuri insights that make parenting easier and more joyful. Thank you for watching.
