0:00 Unbounded self-service doesn't work. Okay, that's my experience. Unbounded self-service because unbounded self-service assumes several things. It assumes that stakeholders or users know what they want. Okay? It assumes that they can express that in words. It assumes that words have a deterministic meaning and the words mean the same thing all the time, which is not the case. um you assume that users understand the nuances and intricacies of data and the complexities of data.

0:33 And the last thing is you assume that users want to be accountable for getting their own numbers and take responsibility for pulling their own data. Now this is an important point right because if one of your stakeholders they ask you for a metric and you give them the wrong number then they can throw you under the bus. But if people self-s serve and they got the wrong number, then it's their fault.

Summary

Unbounded self-service in data analytics often fails because it relies on several flawed assumptions about users' capabilities and understanding. These assumptions can lead to miscommunication, misinterpretation, and a lack of accountability when it comes to data accuracy.

- Unbounded self-service assumes users know exactly what they want from data.
- It presumes users can articulate their needs clearly and consistently.
- The approach relies on the belief that words have fixed meanings, which is often not true.
- Users are expected to grasp the complexities and nuances of data without guidance.
- There is an assumption that users are willing to take responsibility for the accuracy of their data findings.
- Miscommunication can lead to users blaming others for incorrect data if they self-serve.
- The lack of oversight can result in significant errors and accountability issues.
