0:00 Think about these scenarios with your child hearing and watching you. You come home from work and you say man, what a day. I could really use a drink right now. Or another scenario, you're having a party at your house and your child sees you drinking numerous drinks. By the end of the night, you're drunk. In this video we discuss drinking alcohol around your kids. Should you be hiding it from them? Or should you be open and honest about your love for vodka, beer or wine?

1:05 Leave your feedback in the comment section below. In America, like many other countries, alcohol is a big part of our society. It's a big part of celebrations and parties, holidays and even relaxation. It's also big business. In 2016, alcohol beverage sales were nearly $223 billion. It's also the third largest prevent cause of death in the US with nearly 88,000 people per year dying of alcohol related deaths.

1:42 This video is not about the dangers of alcohol or even whether you should drink or not. I just wanted to provide those numbers for some context of how big alcohol is. The video is really about answering the question of whether it's okay or not to drink in front of your children. From the research that I've looked at, it seems that your attitude toward the alcohol has the greatest impact on how your child will perceive it. Remember my examples in the beginning of the video.

2:15 Man, what a day. I could really use a drink right now. The association of alcohol as a reward or used in celebration runs pretty deep. Teaching our children a healthier association with alcohol is gonna take some effort. Here are a few tips. Number one don't get drunk in front of your children. So maybe you wanna wait until you're on that vacation with your buddies or till a time when your children aren't around.

2:46 Number two Never get behind the wheel of a car when you've been drinking and don't be a passenger with someone else who has been drinking. Be sure your kids see that communicate with them the rules of not drinking and driving. Number three don't make alcohol a requirement for fun. If you have a tendency to consume alcohol at every event, try to come up with some ideas that involve your children where alcohol is not involved.

3:18 Have some fun without drinking. And number four make it no big deal. If you are using alcohol to relax or for some other reason, keep it to yourself. You're not going to want to say, man, I could really use a drink right now. Our kids are sponges. They hear and see everything. I'll assume that you don't want your child to have a problem with alcohol. Well, how you relate to alcohol isn't the only factor that determines your child's relationship with alcohol.

Speaker 1

3:53 It is a big factor. We owe it to our children to be responsible and to teach them responsibility. Well, that's all we have for today. If you enjoyed this video, please give it a thumbs up.
