0:00 I'm Kristen vulk and I teach Parenting by Connection in Denver and this is playful ways to overcome the challenge of brushing teeth part one I love to use play to resolve Universal family challenges we call it play listening when you get laughter going it helps to release tensions around a particular issue and it also helps children feel close and connected to us which which in turn helps their mind to function well it can also de resolve fears and anxiety

0:31 around things and build emotional safety and confidence for a child so the first idea for you is to if your child is resisting brushing their teeth you say something like Oh Come here you get really close to your child let's brush your ear o that's really dirty let's get it shiny and clean sound effects are a good good part of this as well okay let's get your knee now lots of bugs down there want to get laughter going is what

1:01 you're what you're really going for here cuz that laughter again helps to create closeness and connection with your child and just start doing all these different body parts now it's your Elbo and pretty soon your child will be saying no mommy my teeth my teeth and you're like okay and you can start brushing your child's teeth the second idea for you is to say something like I sure hope no one brushes my teeth I hope there's no dentist around here I'm going

1:30 to keep them hidden so you want to be goofy make it sound really funny and saying it that way is really an invitation to your child to actually come and brush your teeth and and what you're trying what you're going for here again is laughter but you're also giving the child the more powerful role so you might even want to start doing a game of Chase no no you can't cut my teeth and uh but you but because you want to give

1:54 them the powerful role you want them to catch you you want them to get a little bit of your teeth and then you squirm and squirrel away a little bit you roll over on your side for example and then they're able to get a little bit more and again you're get going for that closeness and connection the laughter so that your child um shows you they want to be close to you this is how their mind functions well and is so important

2:17 in helping them to work work closely with you if you want to learn more you can go to Parenting byc connection.net or on Facebook it's Parenting by connection with Kristen vul in Denver thank you
