00 The other day I came across a study that blew my mind. In it, the researchers were able to completely stop inflammation in just a few weeks with just one simple food. No special diet or exercise program, just one food and it ended up working like an inflammation drug such as ibuprofen but without all the side effects. And the results were amazing. The participants didn't see a 5 or even 10% reduction, it was 23% on average. When I first saw those numbers, I thought this was too good to be true and maybe it was just one isolated study. But then I looked at other research on this and saw the same thing over and over again. In fact, this stuff works not just for general inflammation but also arthritis, heart health, and even gut issues. And it's a normal food that you can buy at the supermarket and it's not even curcumin. Crazy, right?

52 So, let's talk about what it is and how to get the same benefits. This is important if you have chronic inflammation, persistent pain, or just want to improve your overall health. The study I'm referring to was just 4 weeks long and included a group of healthy adults. The researchers gave them 500 mg of this food extract every day and measured one of the most important inflammation markers in the body called C-reactive protein or CRP. This is the same marker that doctors often look at when they want to know how much inflammation is going on inside your body. At the start of the study, the participants had CRP levels of around 6, which is actually fairly elevated for normal people. 4 weeks later, those levels had dropped by an average of 23%.

35 Think about that for a second. This wasn't a drug or some experimental treatment. It wasn't a strict anti-inflammatory diet where people completely changed the way they ate. They simply added one food extract to their daily routine and then saw inflammation drop by almost a quarter. And the crazy thing is that the placebo group saw basically no improvement at all. That's exactly what you want to see in a good study because it tells us the results were caused by the food and not just placebo or random chance. But, here's the part that really got my attention. There wasn't just a drop in CRP, but also other inflammation markers. For example, the researchers also measured uric acid and found that it dropped by an incredible 37%. Now, if you've watched my channel before, you know that uric acid is becoming one of the hottest topics in health research because high levels have been linked not just to gout, but also metabolic problems and cardiovascular disease. So, what we're seeing here is not just a reduction in one inflammation marker, we're seeing improvements in two important markers at the same time. And then I went down the rabbit hole and also found other studies on arthritis, heart problems, and even gut issues.

43 This stuff helps with all of these. Study after study kept showing similar patterns. Lower inflammation, lower oxidative stress, less muscle damage, and healthier arteries. Now, before I reveal what this is, let's talk about why this matters so much because inflammation is one of those things people don't really notice until it gets bad. You don't wake up one day and suddenly say, "Wow, my CRP is elevated." That's not how it works. Instead, the signs are usually much more subtle.

11 Recovery gets worse, you feel more tired, you don't bounce back from stress the way you used to, and your joints start feeling older than they should. Your body just feels a little more worn down than before. Keep this in mind because the food I'm talking about was just normal tart cherries, which definitely surprises a lot of people. If I ask people to name the strongest anti-inflammatory foods, most will probably say turmeric with curcumin, ginger, olive oil, or maybe fatty fish.

39 Very few people would say cherries, but the research on tart cherries is actually very impressive. The reason they work so well in lowering inflammation is their extremely high anthocyanin content. These are compounds that give tart cherries their deep red color. These compounds help reduce oxidative stress and calm down inflammatory pathways throughout your body. That's important because inflammation and oxidative stress tend to feed off each other. The more oxidative stress you have, the more inflammation you will see, and the more inflammation you have, the more oxidative stress tends to build up. What makes tart cherries so special over other foods is that they don't affect one inflammation marker only. You see a reduction in all kinds of markers at the same time, which something even curcumin doesn't do in all the studies. So, how do you take tart cherries to get the same benefits? What do you have to do to basically see the same results that the participants saw? Well, the problem is that the different studies didn't all use the same form. Some used tart cherry juice, others used tart cherry concentrate or extract like in this study, and some even used capsules. That just shows us that you don't necessarily need some special form to get all these benefits. Let's start with the simplest option, which is just eating normal tart cherries themselves. If you can get them fresh or even frozen, that's probably the most natural approach. The problem is that tart cherries are hard to find than regular sweet cherries, and they're only in season for a relatively short time. That's why most of the research uses juices or concentrates instead.

13 Still, if you enjoy them and can get your hands on them, then a handful several times per week is definitely a great place to start. You're getting the anthocyanins, the polyphenols, and all the other compounds in their natural form. The second option is tart cherry juice, which is what many studies use, and they always use it around 240 ml or about 8 oz once or twice per day. It's not a tiny amount, and it's basically a full glass. The advantage is that it's really easy, and you know you're getting a meaningful dose of all the active compounds. The problem is that you're also getting quite a bit of sugar. Now, personally, I don't think that's a huge problem if you're otherwise healthy and active, but it's definitely something to keep in mind if you're trying to keep your sugar or fructose intake low, which then brings me to the option that I personally find the most practical, which is tart cherry concentrate or extract. This is basically tart cherry juice with most of the water removed.

11 The nice thing about concentrates is that you can get the equivalent entire glass of juice with just one or two tablespoons. That's why a lot of people prefer them. They're easier to store and easier to travel with, and you're getting a much bigger portion in smaller volume. In many cases, 1 Tbsp of concentrate is about the same as drinking a full serving of juice. For example, if your goal is specifically inflammation reduction, and you want to replicate the study I showed you in the beginning, then this will be your best option. And in the study, they used 500 mg of tart cherry extract per day, and again produced a 23% average reduction in CRP in just 4 weeks. That's really impressive considering how convenient these capsules are. You simply take them and then move on with your day. Just one thing, when you're shopping for tart cherry supplements, the label can be very misleading. Some products contain only a tiny amount of actual tart cherry extract, and others are standardized for the anthocyanins, which do most of the heavy lifting. So, if you're going down the supplement route, I would definitely look for products that tell you how much exactly they contain of the active compounds. It should be a standardized extract and not some wishy-washy label.

22 And also make sure they are tested for pesticide residue, because this is a plant extract after all, and you don't want unnecessary pesticides in it. One last thing you need to know is that consistency matters here. Most of the studies that found benefits were in one-time interventions. So, participants were getting tart cherries every day for at least a few weeks. In this case, again, four weeks, which is a fairly short time frame, but there are also longer studies. That's how you give these compounds enough time to gradually reduce your inflammation. And then there's also another reason I like tart cherry so much. Unlike many anti-inflammatory supplements, they seem to offer benefits beyond just inflammation, so you're also getting other things. You might have seen my other video on their effect on sleep, and tart cherries are actually one of the few foods that naturally contain melatonin. They also contain compounds that help your body produce and use melatonin better. So, some people notice not only improvements in inflammation, but also better sleep quality and better recovery. That's a pretty nice bonus if you ask me, especially when all you need to do is include a new food into your meal plan without overhauling your diet or lifestyle.
