0:00 it's depends on the human so it's just a tool so if you're a bad human AI is going to be bad so you you have to be good person I got even scared but I think like thinking about what is humanity and what does it mean to be human is important thing to discuss like dur next couple years this is very important thing to talk about so that

0:34 was the inspiration GM GM and welcome back to the nft Now podcast I'm Matt Medved and today's guest is a very special artist in our community Emy kusano is a tokyo-based artist known for her work with AI to explore retr futurism and Japanese pop culture she's also the second artist we've curated for our partnership with LG art lab and her

1:04 piece advertising humanity is now live on the platform today's episode is brought to you by LG artlab a digital art gallery that you can enjoy at home LG art lab transforms your living room into a worldclass gallery enhancing accessibility and allowing art lovers to enjoy their Digital Collection on LG OLED TVs now integrated with the ethereum blockchain LG art lab lets you collect trade and display artworks seamlessly on lg.com very excited for this conversation I've known Emmy since

1:35 her breakout release neural Fad in in Tokyo bright moments last year and it's been amazing to watch her evolution in the space this is a great conversation and without any further Ado we will give you Emmy kusano Emmy kusano on the nft Now podcast it's been a minute super happy to have you on how you doing I'm doing great thank you for having morning time for me because the time difference yeah

2:06 the AG of time zone is is always a little tricky but I'm glad we could find the right time really excited to dive into everything today obviously you have your LG art lab drop and that's going to be great before we get into that why don't we give a little bit of the background like how did you get into web 3 and AI art H first time I use AI in my artwork was actually my music career I I I am

2:34 musician you're a musician too right I am yeah I I am a singer of The sini Wave band it's been a 10 years since when I was University so I actually use the AI element to my music video that was around 2018 back then we call we didn't call like artificial intelligence but more like a machine learning deep learning and I use like 1980s Tokyo look filter

3:10 it was called like style transfer and then I put that filter onto my liveaction footage and that was the first time I experienced with AI but however at that time like I really enjoy the how do I say like clam of the machine very machine likeness and I I really like the texture but I didn't feel like this was my art it's it's more like experimental thing so ever since

3:41 then I really I didn't really touch the AI but everything really changed around the 2021 and when the two like me Journey save of diffusion started to come out suddenly AI could generate like very rear and detail images and I've become like completely addicted and I spent almost like every day every day and I I was with my phone I get also prompt

4:13 on a mid journey and I truly got in into like AI art and that's amazing for web3 I think the journey like started in 2021 you know the story already but the Journey began with my son I work on an nft project together with my 80 years old son and we had a project called Zombie

4:43 zookeeper he was actually featured on nfg before me yeah that's so funny that's so funny yeah yeah when I over yeah over Cher yeah he he was he was the because he like literally Mass adopted nft in Japan that at that time no one knows about nft but he was on a like Prime T TV like news show and because

5:14 Steve Ali bought some of his piece was around six for like three pieces and yeah it went really viral and I met lots of great people lots of great people from the commun Community all over the world through my songs artwork and I also started like anime project with my it's my songs collector and yeah I yeah but eventually I decided to focus

5:44 sorry on my personal art I've been creating art for a long time in a different form like photography music inspiration but I never really consider by myself as a like fulltime artist but now I'm finally able to F support myself as an artist I love that what what a it's a great trajectory and you know I know we first met it was last year and

6:17 it was at bright moments Tokyo and I have a really distinct memory of this because I remember like coming in and it was the first time that bright moment had ever done the AI track right and I remember there was all this buzz and and I I came in it was neural fad was your was your collection and I remember meeting you and you told me that your son had been featured in nft now and you

6:43 know I remember just being really struck by your work and being like wow this is really really cool it's got that like retrofuturistic like you know like Japanese kind of street style like it was super interesting and I was like all right I'm gonna pick up a piece tomorrow I showed up the next day and it was completely sold out your your your piece was one of the Breakthrough kind of like I I like the Breakthrough

7:08 kind of releases that year dominated the conversation in in righton soyo and I think that that it really did like like provide a big springboard kind of like a Lun for for you to kind of like really make a name for yourself at the intersection of AI art and web 3 full disclosure I did end up collecting a piece on secondary later on you know but but I'd love to hear like that that experience from your

7:35 perspective because it does seem like like that was when things started to really start rolling for you yes and then congratulation to neuro fat it was nominated on Luman prize finalist congratulations yeah I saw that yes I hope I can get some prize I will know in a two weeks so fingers cross finger fingers Closs yeah Rond Tokyo was where I released my first collection I yeah

8:06 I think I minted like very first NFD in 2021 like which is audio visual but this was like a like real my big collection and also my first AI artwork I I ever Meed and it's called neura fat and it was fictional fictional Street snap history like fashion history from Japanese Street fashion I created

8:36 with my prompt at that time I I actually make prompt on Mid journey and everything I know about like Japanese fashion there's so many like distinct distinct style from from like 60s 70s 80s each Fashions are so unique I tried to prompt that kind of uniqueness in English and that was really hard part and so there's a actual

9:10 like fashion Tribe Called Tak nooku which is dressing up like NE neon color kind of like a kimono onesie and then the makeup is like a gr Rock style but it doesn't really come out if I type taku on M Journey because large young AG model is very tent to Western culture so I what I did was that I hacked Western culture to prompt

9:43 Japanese culture and that approach was really interesting and I think at that time I see many people were doing like lots of different styles but I I didn't have any concept at first I just prompting every day like every hour every minute and so prompting is all based on your taste you know Claire silver said taste is your skill new

10:14 skill so my skill was a knowledge of the Japanese fashion so I was typing I generated every day I just make a neopat account and I just uploading them and I was so bright moment Tokyo so when bright moment Tokyo has been decided s golden from right moment came to Tokyo for that was like right click and save event and I was there and

10:48 so I got introduced s by some of my mutual friends and I talk to cess I am making actually AI right now this is my first AI art and he's like are you like are you actually like making generative art I I I I know you're a musician you're the founder of pfb but what's your talent I was like and I was showing that picture and he really

11:19 oh yeah we got to do this and he said he gave me a opportunity even I am very newbie and that was really exciting moment the brightest moment in my career and I was so privileged to be a part of bright moment bright moment was a really amazing Community I could I could see all the great collectors and artists all at the same time they came to Tokyo and what a great

11:51 time and we had a dinner every day and also at that event I met some of the top AI artists like Malo kinger Mario Kerman Claire silver Ivan Pinder they're all there and before I met them I never know AI artists I only see Instagram some of the AI artists but I've never met them and some people

12:23 told me oh I when I was showing like this is new project I am doing oh you just thing and I I think anyone can do it and some people said oh this is not your art and you're not making motto you're not you're not artist who said that just like people on Twitter or like people in your life or people in my life people in my life so but it was yeah it was wrong so when I met yeah when I

12:56 met Claire Claire and all the people I I am an Admire and they're so and also they they use Ai and very differently they're very uniquely and each artist has a different context and that really inspires me and college me and I decided to oh AI this is something I want to work on less of my life so right moment

13:27 really changed my life and yeah the CLA has been really great mentor to me and she invited me to the Christy's Gucci auction that's two months after bright moments and that was my second show while life yeah I'd love to dig into that just a little bit too to hear a little bit more about kind of like your relationship with Claire I know that obviously she collected your Genesis piece on super rare has really been a

13:55 big champion of your work and like you said there was that big oration you did for Gucci that was also Christy's auction right you said yes that was a Christy auctions and that was really amazing experience so we we got together in Tokyo and actually right after Tokyo I went I was invited to the NFC event so we both spent time together in Lisbon we had a dinner

14:26 and lunch and talking about the New pieces and she really gave me a lots of advice and she she's a she's just really amazing person 100% 100% good person to have on your side I'll never forget actually U for the for the listeners for the for the for the OG's listening to the nft Now podcast that first episode we did with Claire silver a few years back you can actually hear like me and and my co-founders like all having an epiphany

14:58 around AI art in like real time because just the way she described it as like a camera for your imagination the idea that taste was the new skill obviously we've heard a lot of these things now more but that was that was really towards the beginning of it and you know she really opened our eyes so shout out to Claire she's been a great a great Advocate and and supporter and Champion for artists in the space let's let's

15:20 talk about your LG art lab drop so the piece is called advertising Humanity and love to hear just in your own words like what was your inspiration behind it what was the process like how did it come together yes okay Alver in humanity the inspiration behind this work was my deep love for Japanese TV commercial from 1980s and I often find myself watching all the Japanese TV

15:52 program and ads on YouTube and especially that era like Jaan was used to be a global leader in 1980s like top company like Sony and Forefront of the world but thing has been changed a lot since then and it was a time like like Japan's pass groly and I'm I'm a bit obsessed with that era and not only Japan but I I think I'm very obsessed

16:23 with 1980s or before internet era where the mass media's and influence was strong for some reason I was born in 1990s and I grew up with internet so yeah every work of my every work I think you you feel that kind of essence and advertising Humanity there's a woman looks like me who like

16:55 cherree is saying something like Humanity cannot it's humanity is cannot be monetized or like that kind of like Eerie feeling like is inspired by late night like Japanese TV commercial for Consumer Finance company and often leer to sarakin in Japanese and the there's the

17:27 slogan like use like responsib responsibly like with a cheerful woman smiling and that kind of that was the very like the inspiration but at the same time like I wanted to work I wanted to the work reflect a controversial conversation happening around AI today and I I imagine that like if some something like well like

17:59 was on everywhere like broadcast World U broadcast on all the TV or over the America like it might be trigger strong reaction I was also scared to drop this artwork because there has been like lots of AI back crash recently and you know I'm in a small filter bubble who loves nfts and AI like my all my friends all

18:30 all all like my collectors and artist friends are like like curious curious type of creative people but once I drop from filter bubble sometime like if my tweet got viral some people just attacking me yeah yes and you're not artist you're like AI you're you're stealing or that it happens in waves

19:03 right there's like way every every couple months there's like a like a big tweak goes viral and it's just like the debate starts all over again and it's just like so closed-minded you know yes so so I got I got even scared but I think like thinking about what is humanity and what does it mean to be human is important thing to discuss like dur next I don't know like 10 years or a couple years this is very

19:37 important thing to talk about so that was the inspiration very cool very cool we love the piece obviously and you know I think it's it's really great to have you be a part of LG art lab you know I know we've talked a bit about it but it's like you know this is a partnership that you know now media you know we've been working with them for years now you know they they were a sponsor of

20:07 three of the four gateways in Miami and Korea and the first ever Gateway in 2021 that was their first exposure to the web 3 space and so you know for those listening who don't know LG art lab is kind of like a scrappy passionate little startup within the larger like LG ecosystem and it's you know it's it's run by a great team that loves digital art that is really championing it both internally and externally and really wants to bring digital art to the

20:35 masses and that's a huge alignment with our mission you know at nft now and now media has always been empower the creators of culture and bring this movement from Niche to mainstream right and so part of bringing it from Niche to mainstream is meeting the public meeting the masses where they are and the reality is a lot of people you know may have bought an LG Smart TV to watch their favorite Netflix shows but they didn't necessarily think that it could

21:03 also be a digital art gallery but we are going to show them that that's possible by bringing meaningful art by bringing impactful artists to more than 14 million screens in the United States right now because it's US Territory right now but as it continues to expand globally millions and millions hundreds of millions of of screens worldwide and so super excited to have you be a part of it obviously you're going to have a billboard in Time Square we're

21:32 going to we're going to be diving into to everything and I wanted to hear just from your perspective what excites you about partnering with LG art lab on this release I am very excited to be on the screen and I think being on a like breaking this fi of bubble is one of the hardest thing in this era and I my social contents are very very

22:05 how do I say it's saturated into my algorithm so it's very algorithm based consumption so sometime my voice my visual was not really sent to huge on the audience and some sometime that might cause backlashes or some of the

22:38 controversy but I I would like to experiment with this Channel and which is really exciting thing and I've never seen my face on before so it's it's very exciting and also I I am really happy that LG such a big company is like bullish on digital they believe in at digital art and I I work

23:08 with the team I I I talk on the zoom call for registration and all the stuff but they're really flexible like they they don't say like any any like anything about my directional art and they they really prioritize the artists's feeling she said like I would like to priortize like what's your

23:39 comfortable so that that really encouraged me yeah no absolutely that's one thing we found the LG art Le team is very artist friendly which is incredibly important for us at NFD now you know like every year we've done Gateway we've never taken a commission from any of the artists that we exhibit you know like that's really important for us to always be a platform for championing artists empowering artists and so we need to make sure that in our

24:02 Partnerships that's very much aligned and yeah so well but for everyone who's listening to this podcast at El your your piece is now live at on lg.com it's a oneofone piece and you know as mentioned LG art lab.com is currently accessible US Territory but obviously you know little VPN action can can can get things going as well so very excited to see to see everything come together and you know as a

24:35 collector myself I know that you you've built a really great and engaged collector base you regularly engage with your collector base you there's a group chat that I'm a part of and I feel like you are just very communicative and intentional about how you how you relate with your collectors and so I think that that you know especially in the current market climate that can really make a big difference right people people you know rarely these days

25:08 are is anyone just buying a piece of digital art cold like being like Oh I like that but like they people like to have the relationship with the artist like to get to get to know the artist like it's a two-way street which is very different than like in the traditional art world you know where you have all the Galleries and intermediaries so I'm curious like what advice do you have for artists who are looking to build a

25:29 collector base like you did like what are some of the the strategies or techniques you used or you know just some of the things that you that that you bring to to that approach yeah it's really hard to be on the social media every time and making Discord channel is not the answer for this year so it's very hard to engaging everyone and sometime like I I some time the collector of mine are

26:00 Anonymous and hard to reach all all all of the people but I think like having strategy is very important and sorry the first like I like if you are like AR stage I recommend looking at the digital galleries where you you would like to work like if if you have a favorite artist please check like his or her release where where they

26:32 work with and I see like where the artists are like Inspire and showing their work so this will be your understand the the landcape of set the clear goal for you and I I am very lucky like I've been on a tender right moments expanded art and there are so many great Community so like I I think like even if if your art is really great but if

27:04 you release wrong place it doesn't reach out to the great collectors and sometime it's very sad to see like even the great artists and lots of followers but they release like very London price and not many people knows about that release is happening so it's important to know which like digital gallery or like your favorite art kind of thing and it's it's really good thing

27:36 that one of the greatest thing about digital art is you aren't locked you aren't un lock to the exclusive agreement with Galleries and you can work with multiple platform like if you are into AI like you can look G like fellowship or like there like check the creations and like if you're into like a like coding art there's an art box and you can find the OG and where are they

28:08 and you can go to local meet up or like online communities and like finding like great great Community is the most important thing to survive like digital art and once you start releasing work and this is advice for the artists in the middle stage I think remember the quality is key so this is advice I give to myself as well there will been many

28:39 opportunities like once you started so like exhibition and collaborations but I think it's essential to make sure each piece you release is something you're proud of I think that is important I I think the networking is important communicate with collector Bas is important but I think yeah quality of your work you satisfy with is a very very important and the main thing M maintaining schedule that allows you to

29:12 create like your like satisfiable artwork is very important and then lastly don't forget to think into like a long term so like if you even if you're done if you're art doesn't sell right now it's it's a long term so maybe like one is when isum will be like 10 times more bigger in the

29:42 future so you you you just have to like you just have to like focusing working even if it's a quiet days you just even I I just keep creating even if it's not minted you just like you can actually tweet about it or put it on the Instagram and some people ask me like where it's going to be minted and and

30:14 then you can just upoad on Foundation super rare like everywhere LG art love yeah for someone if someone's inquiring you know like you know exactly but just be careful of the scam yeah yeah yeah yeah you shout out to that that's that's a great Point I know there's a lot of for everyone listening you know there a lot of scams targeting artists out there right now a lot of people trying to pretend sometimes even pretending to be nft now journalists

30:42 reaching out for an interview or coming from decrypt or coming from one of these Publications pretending to need an interview and then always be wary on that if it's coming you know like from from someone you haven't really heard of before and then you know they ask you usually they ask you to download something and that download is a a virus you know that that'll so drain just just for people listening want to make sure people know got to be careful out there

31:06 but those are all incredibly great points Emy and really really thoughtful and I love how you've kind of how you have you know collaborated with you know different platforms like right moments tender and now LG art Lab in order to expand your your reach you know I think one thing that's great too is you know you know I'm a big believer in the Asia Pacific region as a driver of like the next like like cycle for for nfts and and onchain

31:36 culture and creativity I know you exhibited and spoke at Gateway Korea last year you exhibited with us in Gateway Miami obviously too and I know you also exhibited with KF Soul soul in during Korea blockchain week free Soul this year so I'm curious to get your perspective like for the Asian region like what trends are you seeing for AI art and web 3 adoption like is there a widespread understanding is there is it still a bit nent like how

32:06 are how are things evolving yeah that's a hard question and it's hard to generalize across though Asia and it's very different from country by country and also when I went to Korea I met people on the future canvas and Korea blockchain people they're all brish on digital art but at the KF I thought people are more friendly

32:39 to digital art but still I feel like a Outsider in a Art Market so the key of the art fair like was really paint Centric so but people are really interested in oh I've never seen air before and that was like your your art really changed my perspective and some people are really

33:09 curious about it but yeah it's it feels like even in the same country I feel so different you know traditional art scene and digital art but speaking about like Japan I think people are are very optimistic about new technology Ai and web stre and I feel like not many

33:40 people are scared of AI compared to like English speaking community on online yeah just I can't generalize it but but Japanese people is yeah they're usually easy going for like new tech they the curve yes yeah they they don't judge AI like good or bad it's just the

34:12 how you use and I I think because of the like anime and the like robots an AI thing are like very like friendly type of people being part of the culture like that kind of imagery and and yes that's that's something I I I am drawing in another collection called techno animism yeah Japanese people believe like

34:43 holy ghost in every object so that's why like it's depends on the human so it's just a tool so if you're bad human and is going to be bad so you you have to be good person so that's something the way of think and yeah even I am one of the cultureal council member for Japanese government talking about Ai and intellectual property the

35:13 Japanese government are really bullish on AI thing yeah yes it's still like if you go to Singapore China they're they like have like gaming communities like of web stre is like a Singapore and South Korea they're really supporting Ai and the web stre more than Japan I think yeah so I'm curious too like you

35:48 know obviously the AI space moves so fast web three moves really fast too but it's like AI space is like you know there's new developments new tools new everything every day every every minute like you know the the the the the models are are like literally getting smarter as we speak right so like I'm curious like what are you what do you think the the future of AI art looks like what does the future hold for the

36:13 intersection of of AI and art like what trends are you seeing what are what are some of the things that you're thinking about as you navigate the future of the space uhhuh that's a good question H but before question I I want to ask like how is the reaction to AI thing in US yeah generally it's a great question it really varies like like you said I think there there's still a lot of backlash and misunder understanding around it

36:45 there are people I think people always fear what they don't understand we've seen this in crypto we've seen this with nfts we're definitely seeing this with ar II especially where certain professions feel threatened you know I'm I'm a writer I'm a journalist you know like and there are a lot of you know I've always embraced I embrace a I use it like every day and it doesn't mean that it replaces my writing but I use it to automate the more wrote and

37:16 routine and tedious elements of writing like transcribing an interview having to go through and pull out all the best quotes like you know you know like some copyright writing things that allow me then to focus and because you know your brain is a muscle right and no matter how many times you do it enough reps it'll eventually get tired so I'd rather use that muscle on on lifting the weights that matter right which is like the creative side like the feature

37:44 writing like the stuff that only I can do like like really well and let AI automate the rest because it allows me to then use use my unique skill set to the best of its abilities and that's that's a very like abundant glass half full mindset that I can't say there like everybody in my field shares right there's a lot of fears around being replaced by AI there's a lot of people who see it as a threat and I

38:12 understand that I mean you know there's the old saying like AI won't replace you but a human replacing AI May right and there are definitely some jobs out there like data entry and things like that that are going to going to go obsolete you know like AI will definitely change the face of copywriting and graphic design and things like that that doesn't mean we're not going to need writers it doesn't mean we're not going to need designers but that but it'll

38:35 definitely impact those Industries and to me that's just a natural evolution of Technology but there's definitely still a lot of like fear and misunderstanding and and the like and so yeah like like you said whenever a a tweet on AI tends to like go viral or get a lot of likes or anything like that you get the naysayers swooping in and being negative on it and you know I'm not I'm not going to Discount those fears as like unimportant like I I I

39:04 recognize that's that's important part of it but like you know there were those same fears around the the the the advention of Photography that all of a sudden like we weren't G to need painters anymore obviously not the case right like those are two different things I know it's not like a Perfect Analogy but I I think that to me like I I think about AI as like augmented intelligence in terms of like it it enables humans

39:32 to like to really like maximize their superpowers and I I I and I think that like you know in the United States while well there's been a ton of innovation here and there's a ton of you know like like obviously a lot of companies here are the ones driving it Forward there is still a lot of misunder standing hesitancy backlash Etc that exists so

40:03 you know it's it's going to take time like with any new technology I mean we look how long it's taken with crypto and with Bitcoin and with nfts to like you know break through some of the stigmas that exist around them right you know things these things do take time but yeah like I I I do think that there's there's much like the United States in general there's it's very divided on it yeah I I was really surprised when Petra

40:31 Voice got really attacked by AI yeah no was it Alum Comber Petra Petra Voice oh Petra yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah sorry I heard something different yeah yeah so like she got really attacked that and some people started to did you see the whole drama yeah and there some people just stealing Petra's style and then I am drawing so that I am the actual

41:04 artist and that didn't really make sense and yeah but yeah that that this like shift and like thinking comes from the back crash I have been facing for using AI in my work like I've heard people said you're not real artist like you're just playing with AI but instead of being this college I'm actually more excited to by this circumstance because

41:34 if you look at art history the thing that were rejected or challenged is only on our history art history and import and became most important movement so yeah the like you said photography oh photography it was not is not art it's just a record and even like impressionism like oh you you're just you just don't finish the art and and

42:05 Banky oh just the B bandism it's not the art but yeah there they became art so I believe like I am very important movement I I'm in an important Mo movement so I I I still call myself multidisiplinary artist or digit artist instead of AI artists I kind of like I never really label myself as an AI artist but recently I've started

42:38 thinking about embracing I can be a AI artist like I I think I would just continue to use AI for next decades I I don't know I don't know yet but I think of eventually people don't say AI artist anymore yeah yeah know I think that's right you know like I I sometimes use the term AI collaborative artist to make

43:09 it clear that it's like it's in collaboration with AI but like you know that there there's a lot that goes into it that's it's you know it's not as simple as spitting out an output right you know and and obviously there's you know for for a lot of the artists in the space there's various levels to which they like really kind of make it their own and and and and use you know a number of different tools to do
