0:00 foreign [Music] hi I'm Dr Becky Bailey the creator of conscious discipline and what I'd like

0:31 to show you is this table top called a time machine but what it is is a conflict resolution mat that helps us through those daily conflicts that children and students have throughout the day he pushed me she touched my paper she called me a name all that constant constant constant we're going to use that as a teaching opportunity and this is the mat that helps that work so let me give you an example of how it

1:01 works I'm going to bring in my two people here and you can put this right on top of your desk and let's say that Manuel here and Kim have had a conflict and Kim has pushed Manuel so the first thing I'm going to say is are you willing to solve the problem in a different way yes yes okay and they put their fingers on the mat now once you teach this they'll be able to do it by themselves

1:27 then the next step is why they're on the mat the first thing they're going to do is take a deep breath in through their nose exhale slowly relaxing your body your shoulders your eyes and you're going to take a Next Step and this next step is designed to kind of open their heart to get that little bit of forgiveness to come in from what has happened in the past so look at each other and I kind of wish each other well

1:54 then you're going to take your next step and that says one two three let's do it and that's just this notion of we're on the same team we want to do things better we want to be in relationship and it's important to us in our home and our school family so I'm going to say one two three and you two are going to say let's do it one two three let's do it all right and they take it up in their

2:18 next step and Manuel is going to say I don't like it when you push me tell her I don't like it when you're push me please say excuse me and walk around me please say excuse me and then walk around me and you're going to respond right here in print okay I can do that and once we teach this new language and this new skill then we're going to ask them will you repair after this moment in history

2:43 where the relationship ran into a little bump and I'll say is there a way you could connect would you like a fist bump or an elbow bump all right do it and that's how it works now what we can do too with the older students they can just pick this up once they learn it they'll put it on their desk now with the little guys we want to take this tabletop conflict resolution mat and we want to put it in their play area into

3:10 housekeeping in with their blocks and so what they can do is play with the process so again with young children when they play with the process that means it's going to generalize out into life so we just can't teach it in life and think it's going to go from situation to situation but if you play with it it's a miracle so then they can either use their little figures like this and they can just put their figures

3:34 and they might just start just walking up and down the time machine just and back and forth and then ultimately they will learn the pictures you can see the pictures on the side so this little guy first ones I need to take a deep breath then they're going to wish well then they're going to do their one two three then they're going to solve the problem the goal is for them to have access to it in their play

4:00 and ultimately as they are playing with it the teacher might come over and say oh you're playing with the conflict resolution man you must have had a little problem what did this little guy do keep pushing me oh and there you go and you start and play the game so this is wonderful for older kids where you have a confined space it's easy for them to grab it it's a little more inconspicuous as they do it on

4:32 their table as they practice their new skills and for the younger ones you teach it the same way preferably in the larger mat and put the small mat in the play area so have a wonderful time with this tabletop conflict resolution map we call the time machine so that in each interpersonal conflict happening in your class you will hear often one two three let's do it

5:07 thank you [Music] foreign foreign foreign

Summary

Dr. Becky Bailey introduces the "time machine," a tabletop conflict resolution mat designed to help children navigate daily conflicts in a constructive way. This tool encourages children to engage in conflict resolution through structured steps, promoting emotional regulation and relationship-building.

- The time machine serves as a conflict resolution mat for children to address daily disputes.
- It involves a series of steps: deep breathing, wishing each other well, and affirming teamwork.
- Children learn to express their feelings and request apologies through guided language.
- The mat can be used in both classroom settings and play areas for younger children to practice conflict resolution.
- Older students can utilize the mat discreetly at their desks to reinforce learned skills.
- Engaging in play with the mat helps children generalize conflict resolution skills to real-life situations.
- The process emphasizes emotional regulation and the importance of maintaining relationships.
