0:00 Hi, my name is Dan Siegel, and it's a pleasure to introduce you to my next book, A Journey to the Heart of Being Human. If you're new to my work, this is a great way to dive in and explore ideas of interpersonal neurobiology and what the mind is and how you can create a healthy mind in yourself. If you've read some of my other books, you may wonder, well, how does this book differ from, let's say, the Developing Mind or Mindsight or the Mindful Therapist?
0:27 This book is quite different because it does two big things that stand out. One, it addresses the question, what is the mind? As its primary thread throughout the whole book. And you may be surprised to find that most fields don't define what the mind is, so it just tackles that issue straight on. The second thing that this book does is it invites you to go along an autobiographical journey of your own to reflect on your own life.
0:57 And to do that, I felt as an author, what I needed to do is be very present myself. So it focuses on the professional journeys of the last 40 years that I've experienced. And it invites you, as we go along together in these five year periods, to actually dive deeply into your own experience as I dive deeply into my own. And then we draw together what the science says about our mental life, about consciousness, about emotions, about thinking and asking the questions of who we are, why are we here, when are we, what are we all about?
1:32 How does the mind work and where does the mind occur? In doing that, we find some answers that may really surprise you. So I look forward to seeing you on the journey, and thanks for joining me. A Journey to the Heart of Being Human.
