0:00 What the heck is going on here? My toddler doesn't want to go to sleep at night. We can't control these little beings and I'm feeling a little frustrated because I'm tired and I'm ready to be done with the day. >> She's the founder of Transforming Toddlerhood. Devon Kunman. >> Your toddler is doing the exact opposite of what you predicted. Our children actually learn way more from our humanness than they would learn from us being perfect robots.

0:24 >> How do you let go of power without feeling powerless? >> We just want this little being to go along with us. But sometimes the harder we push, the more they push against us. Society telling us that toddlerhood is terrible. And on the other side of that is this expectation. You better get your toddler under control. What were some of the things that you struggled with? >> My parents like are really quick to raise their voice with each other. So I noticed that pattern in myself too with my parenting partner.

0:49 >> When a three-year-old says no, that is your first experiment of like what do I do now? We have this illusion of control, but we can't actually control our children. Well, we sure can't control our parenting partners either. We're just so quick to think that our way is like the only right way when there's different paths to the same outcome. How did you take all of that frustration and helplessness and transform it for yourself? The biggest thing that always helps is type the word follow to get a link to my podcast.

Summary

Devon Kunman, founder of Transforming Toddlerhood, discusses the challenges parents face when toddlers resist bedtime and assert their independence. She emphasizes that while parents often feel frustrated and powerless, embracing their own humanity and acknowledging different parenting approaches can lead to more harmonious interactions with their children.

- Toddlers often resist expectations, leading to frustration for parents.
- Children learn more from their parents' authentic behavior than from perfection.
- The illusion of control in parenting can lead to unnecessary conflict.
- Parents may replicate patterns from their own upbringing, such as raising voices.
- Different parenting styles can achieve the same outcomes; there’s no single "right" way.
- Embracing vulnerability and humanity can help transform feelings of helplessness.
