0:00 Everybody. >> Everyone, welcome to McGregor. I'm Franz. This is Lars. We hope you enjoyed our little pre-show Raptor static fire over there. >> We are here at SpaceX's rocket test and development center in McGregor, Texas. It's 4,000 acres. Thank you for having us. Thank you for hosting us, SpaceX. Thank you for everyone here. And thank you for everyone watching online. >> >> We thought we'd just You know, we're we're 20 years from when Elon first introduced the Roadster to the world. And it was really a a proof of concept that proved EVs were viable product, fun to drive, could go the distance. They were real cars. And look at how far we've come in those 20 years.

0:51 >> Yeah, I mean, to be honest, the Roadster is the reason I came to Tesla. And I came here and and we had a master plan to build an EV that proved that we could do everything that Franz just said, and then make a cheaper EV we that people could afford with Model S, and then we built Model 3 and Model Y. But, you know, the last time we had Roadster and SpaceX together, we put Elon's in the in the orbit.

1:16 >> And you can see there. And you know, Starman is still out there somewhere. Amazing feat. But, I think we should get Elon out here to talk more about that. What do you think? >> >> Elon, come on out. >> Elon, come on out. >> >> All right, you're going to see some crazy stuff tonight.

1:58 Like We need an audience to prove that it's not AI or SI. So you guys can tell people you saw it with your eyes. Because what you see with your eyes you will not believe. Yeah. but you're going to see the results of what happens when you have a collaboration with the world's best car company and the world's best rocket company. >> >> AND THIS IS THIS IS THE CULMINATION OF incredible work by Tesla and SpaceX engineers working closely together to make something that you haven't seen in any movie.

2:45 that better than any James Bond car. Better than Well, I don't know. I've never seen anything like this, so You know, when I when I suggested this to the team, I thought, "Am I Am I crazy?" >> Me, too. >> Maybe a little bit. >> >> Exactly. Am I crazy? Not at all. 100% sane. so And then with things kind of built upon themselves and we're like, "Well, maybe we could do a little more of this and a little more of that."

3:22 And I think what you'll see here, by the way, success is not guaranteed. So I want to you know I mean that. It'll probably work. >> >> But if it doesn't work, we're at a safe distance. >> Yes. >> >> And excitement is 100% guaranteed.

3:53 >> >> So Yes, let's go. So let's see. >> the future is autonomous Elon, right? >> Yes. >> But this is not an autonomous car. It is the last >> it is technically autonomous for this demo to make sure we don't kill anyone. >> Correct. >> So just in case. but this will actually be long-term the only manually driven car that Tesla makes.

4:27 >> You got to have some fun sometimes. >> Yeah. And so if you're going to have only one manually driven car let's let's take it to the limits and way past the limits. >> Elon Elon had this crazy idea. I don't know where it came from, but it'd be great to to hear, but but we said >> an insane fever dream. >> Yeah. >> All right, guys, we got 10 seconds. >> 7 6 >> Should we count it down?

4:55 >> 4 >> 4 >> 3 >> 3 >> 2 >> 2 >> 1 >> 1 >> >> Well, it worked.

7:15 >> Flying cars are real. >> Yeah. Well, you know, a friend of mine, Peter Thiel, once said that the future promised us flying cars, but instead we got 140 characters. Well, not anymore. >> Exactly. >> That's not the last thing you'll see, by the way. >> >> To do that, we have a suction a fan suction system on the bottom of the car that can pull up to 2 G's in order to make the car go upside down.

7:49 And then, we borrowed some technology from SpaceX to do the rest. >> Yeah. I mean, this car really sucks, okay? >> >> This This car can suck the chrome off a trailer hitch. It could suck a tennis ball through a hose pipe. >> >> So, and it could stick upside down. >> Now, you might say like how often do you want to stick upside down in a car? Maybe not that often. But, it actually has this >> >> an actual benefit on the track or just driving where the the downforce of the car means you can corner incredibly well. Like, you can corner like it it looks like you're breaking physics cuz the car sticks to the ground so hard.

8:33 so, acceleration, cornering, it's it's going to crush every track record that has ever existed. So. >> >> Yeah, I think the last time we put Roadster with SpaceX, we had Starman in it. And maybe we should check. Did we Did we put anyone in the car, Franz? >> Yeah, I think Starman's going to make an appearance. I think he went for a little ride.

9:05 >> Any minute now. >> Yeah. >> So, yeah. >> Here he is. >> No? Come on. >> The anticipation. >> Me, buddy. >> there he is. He's being coy. >> just to be clear, that is not a real human. >> Yeah. >> >> So, the the car has obviously attitude control thrusters and and main thrusters in the rear. So, it can basically fly like a rocket.

9:40 and it it could do rolls, it could it do like crazy gymnastics. Whatever you want, really. Now, I I should, you know, say that this is not necessarily a safety optimized car. Okay. but, it is it it takes the the fun meter to 11 out of 10. But, speaking of >> fun meter >> Yeah. >> You want to try one? >> Let's try something else. >> Yeah.

10:11 I mean, that was just a little flight. Let's do a longer flight. All right. See what we got set up. >> >> I mean, I've seen a lot of things, but I've never seen that before.

11:02 >> Tony Hawk would be proud. We call that the kickflip. >> Yeah. >> I think we could have cleared more than our whole fleet. >> Yeah, we can go we can go further. >> Let's do it! >> Like, this will be an actual car that's on the roads. You know, I'm not sure it's necessarily legal in all jurisdictions, but like, there will be such a car that a that someone can own. So, it's it's going to be pretty pretty wild that you can have a rocket car.

11:32 >> Yeah, to do that, we have the rockets we borrowed from SpaceX technology. You talked about the carbon overlay pressure vessels. I just want to tell everyone because I'm a spec guy, there's two of them in the car. They are a total of 600 L. It's about 250 kilos of air. And we have 10 nozzles to do all that work. >> And the it's it's using an advanced ultra-high pressure air tank. So, the car can reach its air tank. So, it's not like you you know, you need special propellant or anything like that. It literally is just going to puff itself up and and and and be able to do this these maneuvers whenever you'd like.

12:13 >> Well, why don't we show them the car? So, we since we knew the car was going to fly, since we knew Roadster was going to fly, we looked for some inspiration about flying and we thought we would lean into the most badass stuff out there, SR-71, cars that transform, and that led us to the new Roadster. >> >> So, now you get to up close look at the new Roadster. Thank you, Andy and Lamar.

13:18 Those guys are kicking ass on our engineering team making this all happen. >> >> We can see the car. Very clean. It's a nice clean aesthetic like we I said, we leaned into a little bit of some of the aerospace aesthetics. it's a two-seater. I'll open it up. As you can see, two guys got out of it. We leaned into lightweight as well, so the the seats are molded into the chassis. It's a steer-by-wire system. So, we have a steer-by-wire yoke, steer-by-wire brakes, steer-by-wire throttle.

13:52 And as we get to the to the rear of the car, this is where a lot of the action You guys can't see it, but on online in the diffuser area is where the thrusters are, the fans are, and this is kind of the business end of of the car. But, the car can transform because we wanted to make a pretty car, but also a car that could deliver amazing downforce. So, turn the fans on for us.

14:28 >> Sorry, it's a little loud here. but as Elon said, this car is meant to be the best driver's car. And to do that, we wanted to break the laws of physics. We put the fan sucker system on there to give us traction to be able to corner at greater than two Gs and accelerate with all the traction that goes beyond the tires, which is typically with a 1.26 Gs. You see here we have two modes. We have a high downforce mode, and what's the car is in now is a is a low-drag mode. And the fan system also has two modes. It can suck the car down at low speed to give us traction when we need it, and at high speed we'll open up the front and rear parts of the suction system to create even more flow underneath the car.

15:14 >> Yeah, so it it the the rear wing has variable pitch, so it You adjust the downforce dynamically. And we'll do it automatically based on what it calculates you need when you're going around the track. >> But Elon, how fast did you want to go to 0 to 60? I can't remember. >> Well, you got to break 1 second. Obviously. >> I tested this the other day. Can we put it up, guys? Can we put the test up?

15:43 >> Like this this goes fast. >> We wanted All right, 1 second. Right? You said 1 second.

16:19 >> Well, well, I said less than 1 second. >> Oh, Hey guys, we have a car out there, right? Don't we have a car out there? Can you put it on the max to see Let's try to be 1 second. >> >> Do we have a time?

17:05 What was the time, guys? We didn't have a whole lot of room out on the pad, so we had to cut it short, but do we have a live time? I'm waiting for it. >> 1.1 >> >> Well, while we're getting the live time, you know, I will say this. Elon mentioned the rocket thrusters. You can see the the thrust is exiting the back of the four thrusters faster than the speed of sound, so you see the Mach diamonds. It It actually creates over 80 kilonewtons of thrust.

17:42 >> Yeah, I mean, there's the there are cars and then there's one car that has Mach diamonds. >> I think we broke the system. We did it in 0.17 seconds. >> Yeah, okay. That's Yeah, 0.1 seconds I think we'd destroy the human if we did that. >> >> there you go. There you go. 0.81 seconds. Seconds. >> >> We'll do and and we we anticipate being able to do better than that.

18:17 I I mean, I I would like the Newton's formula F equals MA as A equals F over M. So, as you increase force and decrease mass, you get more acceleration. So, the production car will actually do better than that. So, we'll just we'll just ride the limit of don't detach the retina of the human in the car. >> Well, it is the world's quickest car as production car 0 to 60. It'll do a half a mile in the time that other cars can do a quarter mile.

18:53 and I think that's really what we wanted to say today. What else we got? Anything else? >> No, I mean >> Top speed. >> Oh, yeah, yeah, top speed, of course. Yeah, yeah. >> >> yeah, yeah. Depends on your street, but it'll be a viable car. And yeah, so we're going to have actually a follow-on demo that's >> Or two. Or two. >> Or more. >> multiples.

19:25 >> So I thought like I don't know if this is possible or not, but some people may know about Evil Knievel's attempt to jump the Snake River Canyon. >> Oh yeah. >> Let's give it another shot. >> And we thought this was crazy. >> >> Yeah, man, that's going to look nuts. >> We're going to have to go pretty fast to do that. Like really fast. We're going to need a running start. >> Yeah, you want to run and start, yeah.

19:57 but yeah, the car can go over 230 miles per hour. Hopefully we can get even faster. >> Definitely much faster than that. >> Yeah. How fast? >> Well, I think you got to go at least you got to crack halfway to the speed of sound, I think. >> Okay. >> Yeah. Mach.5. Maybe a little higher. >> All right, challenge on. >> Challenge accepted, sir. >> Yes. >> Where we're going, you don't need tires. >> >> So today marks the day that we build the first world's best flying car and the last best driver's car. When do you want to get it to customers?

20:40 >> we we we enter production in 2028. Actually. >> Actually. For real. >> >> Anything left in your bag? >> Yeah. >> How much? >> You get a I think we might have one more little thing. >> Should we do it? >> Let's go ahead. >> Yeah, yeah, sure. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> Let's do the last thing. >> >> 1 0 lift off.

22:32 Lift off. >> Everyday history unfolds. >> chance to change the lives of millions of people for the better. That's what I came into politics. >> A decision is made. A question is asked. A protest begins. A missile is launched. >> >> A treaty is signed. >> Change political structures in this country for a long time to come. It is deeply humbling. A vote is counted.

23:10 The world changes. >> We will have to raise our voices. >> We oppose violence. >> Hate, that is not a solution. >> We demand accountability from the government. >> Are we ready? >> But before the headlines, before the debate, before the opinions, there is the moment itself. The words that were spoken, >> By 2008, we knew that Epstein was a convicted sexual abuser. How was that not a deal breaker for the president? >> If you, Congresswoman, ask Bill Clinton that.

23:41 >> The people who lived it, the images that tell the story, because the closer you are to the event, the closer you are to the truth. At APT, we believe news should begin where history happens, not where the arguments begin. >> Or do you want to go there? >> That's why we bring you the moments that matter. Accurate, powerful, timely, so you can see more, understand more, and decide for yourself. Accurate, powerful, timely.
