0:01 Dealing with behavioral challenges in the classroom is the number one cause of teacher stress. It's also the number one reason that talented teachers drop out of the profession prematurely. And it's the number one reason for teachers departing from teaching the academic curriculum. Traditional school disciplinary strategies not only don't work for the kids they're applied to the most, but they often make matters worse. Even worse than that. Punitive school discipline is disproportionately applied to students of color.

0:36 And in our efforts to be trauma sensitive schools these days, traditional school disciplinary strategies are about as trauma insensitive as they come. The good news is, we know why traditional school disciplinary strategies don't work. Because these kids don't lack the will to behave well. They lack the skills to behave well. So it's no wonder. Then why no end of rewards, punishments, reinforcement systems, sticker charts aren't going to work.

1:07 Simply motivating these kids to behave well doesn't work because these kids are already trying harder than anybody else to behave well. Our collaborative problem solving approach is an evidence based approach that has been shown to reduce challenging behavior, help you restore the relationships that you're aiming to have with your most challenging students, and and help these students build the skills that they struggle with. It's really time to rethink school discipline and to transform how we work with these students.
